Paul Mescal, Denzel Washington and Pedro Pascal Star in Ridley Scott’s Highly Anticipated Sequel – Punch Drunk Critics

While it’s not the most obvious film to get a sequel, Gladiator was the Best Picture winner in 2000 and a huge box office hit. Plans for a sequel began almost immediately with several wild plot ideas, including at least one that would have involved Russell Crowe’s deceased character Maximus returning from the grave. Thankfully, that didn’t happen, even if it meant having to wait twenty-four years for Gladiator IIin which Oscar nominee for Best Actor Paul Mescal plays a character deeply moved by Maximus’ sacrifice.

Gladiator II stars Mescal as Lucius Verus, yes, the adult version of that “I’ll root for you, Spaniard” kid from the first film. He’s also the son of a noblewoman named Lucilla, played by Connie Nielsen, who returns to watch her adult son fight in gladiators, although she doesn’t recognize him, as they’ve been at odds for years.

The cast also includes Pedro Pascal, Denzel Washington, Joseph Quinn, Fred Hechinger and Derek Jacobi, who reprises his role as Senator Gracchus.

SUMMARY: From legendary director Ridley Scott, Gladiator II continues the epic saga of power, intrigue and revenge set in ancient Rome. Years after witnessing the death of revered hero Maximus at the hands of his uncle, Lucius (Paul Mescal) is forced to enter the Colosseum after his home falls to the tyrannical Emperors who now rule Rome with an iron fist. With rage in his heart and the future of the Empire at stake, Lucius must look to the past to find the strength and honor to restore Rome’s glory to his people.
