Ted Danson Admits to Being a ‘Liar’ in Relationship, Recalls ‘Messy’ Whoopi Goldberg Scandal

Ted Danson looks back on the complicated history of his relationship and how he dealt with his immaturity.

This Thanks the graduate got married for the first time at the age of 23 in 1970 Randy Danson (née Gosch), and after the divorce in 1975 he married Casey Coates two years later.

Their relationship, however, was marred by disappointment and later scandal. In 1979, Casey suffered a stroke while giving birth to their first daughter, and during their 1993 divorce—considered one of the most expensive in Hollywood history—The Good Place actor made headlines for his reported affair with Whoopi Goldberg.

“It wasn’t until I turned 40 that I really grew emotionally” Ted who married his wife Mary Steenburgen in 1995, at age 48, he admitted in a recent interview with NPR.

Although he noted that he “won’t be too specific,” he went on to admit: “I was a bit of a liar in my relationship” adding, “I’ll leave it at that.”

He continued: “At that time, I started working very seriously on myself. I went to clinics, a psychologist, a mentor. I worked very hard not to be a person who hides their emotions and goes out the back door.”

He admitted to this when recalling whether he was a rebellious teenager, to which he replied, “I brought my parents to their knees when I was 45,” apparently referring to the moment when both his divorce and romance with Whoopi became instant tabloid topics.

“It was all this chaos in the press, and my poor parents were like, ‘What?’” he recalled, adding: “I finally called them and they were really nice and came to support me and stuff.”

“The press was awful. But the press work was invaluable. I’m very happy with my time there, even though it was a mess — a very messy mess,” he added.

Yet despite all this mess, he maintained: “I wouldn’t choose a second chance” noting, “You know, if I had done something different and taken a different path, I wouldn’t be with my wife, Mary Steenburgen.”

The couple will celebrate their 30th wedding anniversary next year.

He continued, “I wish I hadn’t become a liar and gone out the back door so early in life. I wish it wasn’t mine, but even your wounds, you have a certain sympathy for them if you’ve been through them, lived through them, acknowledged them, repaired them and so on.”

“I’m terribly ashamed of a lot of things from my past, things that are embarrassing, but that’s my life.”
