Southland Community Garden Walk celebrates Flossmoor’s 100th anniversary

The 12th annual Southland Community Garden Walk typically showcases gardens throughout the region, but this year all but one of the gardens are in Flossmoor to celebrate the village’s 100th anniversary. One garden is in Homewood.

The walk, sponsored by the National Council of Jewish Women South Cook Section, will feature six gardens that ticket holders can visit on Sunday, July 14 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event will take place rain or shine.

In a press release, the organizers wrote: “The gardens provide ideas that might work in your garden. Some gardens are large, some small, some formal, and some smaller. Some have water features, oriental motifs, or hardscaping. Some gardens have edible plants, some perennials, and some annuals.

“This year, all were designed by the gardeners themselves. What all the gardens have in common is that the gardens and the communities in which they are located are loved by their owners. The owners are immensely proud of the beauty they have created and are delighted to share the fruits of their labor with you.”

New this year is a seven-mile Garden Walk/Jog/Bike loop, starting and ending at Goldberg Park, 3301 Flossmoor Road. Anyone who purchases a ticket for the walk will receive a QR code to upload the free Ride with GPS app, provided by Goodspeed Cycle.

The app will continuously display traffic on your route, emitting sound signals to indicate your direction of travel.

“Be kind to the environment. Leave your car at home or at Goldberg Park and walk, run or bike through beautiful Flossmoor and Homewood,” organizers said.

Water and bug spray will be available in each garden. A guide will be on hand to answer questions and provide tips.

Pre-sale tickets are available for $25 at the following locations:

  • 4 Souls Art, 18135 Harwood Avenue, Homewood.
  • Ebel’s Ace Hardware Store, Cherry Creek Plaza, 18410 Governors Highway, Homewood.
  • Gypsy Fix, 1056 Sterling Ave., Flossmoor.

Tickets on the day of the walk are $30 at Goldberg Park.

Ticket holders receive a booklet with addresses and details of the gardens. Included is a map showing the gardens and sponsoring local restaurants.

Proceeds will go to Aunt Martha’s Health and Wellness and Respond Now.
