What to Remember from The Serpent Queen Season 1 Before Season 2 Premieres

O my majesty! Queen of Snakes Season 2 is almost here and I definitely can’t wait to see what happens next for the one and only Catherine de Medici. Season 1 ended with the Queen Regent finally being given the power she always deserved after many trials and tribulations. And I’m sure Season 2 has more in store for her.

In Season 2, Charles IX is old enough to take over after Catherine ruled. We can expect more Guises vs. Bourbons, heightened tensions between Catholics and Protestants, and Edith (who we met a younger version of in Season 1) now seen as a “prophet” with many loyal followers. Tensions, of course, could be the edge Queen Elizabeth needs in England.

Will Catherine be able to control everything? We’ll find out soon enough, as Season 2 premieres Friday, July 12 on Starz. But before we see what happens next, let’s take a look back at what happened in Queen of Snakes Season 1 to get us ready for Season 2!

Catherine is essentially used as a pawn and taken by her uncle, Pope Clement VII, to marry King Francis’ son, Prince Henry, who is second in line. She actually falls in love with her husband, but he is already smitten with his mistress Diana de Poitiers. And after years of infertility, Catherine and Henry are finally able to have children.

Henry eventually becomes king and adds Catherine to his privy council. Irritated by her limited control and the fact that Henry listens to Diana more than her, Henry dies after an accident at a jousting tournament, initially set up by Catherine. This makes her finally succeed in banishing his mistress from court. But she returns. More on that below! Although through it all, in the end he gets what he wants.

The snake queen really knows what she’s doing when it comes to intrigue. We see that this is her chance to take control and she tries to do so with a fake plan to kidnap her son Francis II who is now King and husband to Mary Queen of Scots. Catherine made a deal with Anthony and Louis Bourbon to “kidnap” him but turns on them. When Montmorency shows up she stabs him and tells Anthony to run home under her protection.

Louis is found and taken to prison to be beheaded. Now everyone is where Catherine wants them. She tricks Mary into cutting off one of Louis’ fingers to convince Anthony that she has his brother in prison. Catherine wants to be regent, but she needs Anthony, who is next in line to be regent, and Francis to sign that Catherine can take over the role upon the king’s death, because Catherine’s young son, Charles IX, is next in line.

By the way, Francis is dying of tuberculosis, and his mother tells him that she can give him an opiate to hasten his death and get rid of the pain. But of course, she needs his signature first, and she makes sure to get it.

Antoine is still a tough nut to crack, but in the shoulders of Montmorency, who is still alive after Catherine stabbed him and also knows her kidnapping plan. So this could go very badly for her. Fortunately, she believes she will be able to rule France much better than the Bourbons and Guises, and makes Antoine sign the regency for her.

Rahima asks Catherine if she killed her husband and son for power, but Catherine says for freedom. And so Rahima agrees to help Catherine get rid of the super-Catholic Maria, who, if she took power, would continue her cruel and bloody rampage against the Protestants. Thanks to a false seal she receives from Ruggeri, Maria is fooled into believing that Queen Elizabeth I will help her get rid of Catherine. When she arrives in Scotland, she realizes that it was all a trick.

The season ends with the Bourbon brothers still alive but angry, the Guise brothers – Charles and Francois – not happy that their plan to have Montmorency as regent has backfired, Diane is unexpectedly invited to Charles IX’s coronation, Catherine is now in power, and Rahima is given a title and land for her loyalty to her queen. We also met a young Edith through Montmorency, who will have a bigger role to play in Season 2.

Queen of Snakes The premiere of the second season will take place on Friday, July 12, 2024, and the first two episodes will be available Stars.
