Lycoming County Pre-Departure Facility Fugitive Quickly Returns to Jail | News, Sports, Jobs

On the afternoon of May 30, Derrick Franklin Day, an inmate at the Lycoming County Prison pre-departure center on County Farm Road in Loyalsock Parish, jumped from a basement, setting off an alarm that alerted security officers, according to an affidavit filed by a county detective. Day, 34, who had just started serving a 30-day-to-six-month prison sentence two days earlier, ran to the rear of the nearby Lysock View complex and frantically tried to get in through a locked door but was unsuccessful, investigators said. When a surveillance camera caught Day’s alleged actions, the fugitive stepped away from the door but was soon captured by a security officer at the pre-departure center. Day, of 36 Turkey Bottom Road in Muncy, was taken by a sheriff’s deputy to the Lycoming County Prison and automatically booked into jail. He has since waived a preliminary hearing before Whiteman on a felony escape charge. Day told a county detective that he escaped from the facility before being released because he feared for his safety, the affidavit said. The prison sentence he received came after pleading guilty to a DUI charge, the court document said.
